On June 26th to 28th, several members of the 180th Fighter Wing volunteered on the Air National Guard-sponsored Medical Team for the Ohio Special Olympics Summer Games in Columbus, Ohio. The Medical Team, which consisted of doctors, nurses, guard members, friends and family, assisted with the medical needs of spectators and over 2,600 athletes. This was a great opportunity for guardsmen to use Self Aid Buddy Care and meet other members in the Ohio Air National Guard.

The response from participating 180 FW members was overwhelmingly positive.

First-time volunteer Senior Airman Angela Delgado
stated, "It was cool seeing the opening ceremonies on Friday and to see how excited the athletes were."

Staff Sgt. Kevin Wise said, "I enjoyed meeting people from other bases and look forward to doing it again."

This year, Springfield's 178th Fighter Wing Medical Group hosted the team with operational support from Mansfield's 179th Airlift Wing Medical Group. Medical supplies and equipment were also provided by Rickenbacker's 121st Air Refueling Wing.

"Seeing the smiles on those kids' faces reinforced what a great program the Special Olympics is," said SSgt Kristen Crots. "I felt humbled to be a part of it."
